How It Works
How ATS Keyword Matching Works
Keywords Are Extracted from Job Descriptions
ATS systems and recruiters identify role-critical terms — skills, tools, certifications, job titles — from the job description and rank them by frequency and position. High-frequency terms carry more weight.
Your Resume Is Scanned for Term Matches
The ATS then scans your resume for exact or near-exact keyword matches. Word order, spelling, and phrasing matter. Missing a key term — even if you have the skill — can cause an automatic rejection.
A Match Score Determines Your Visibility
Applicants above the threshold are surfaced to recruiters. Those below are filtered out — often without a human ever reading the resume. Tailoring your resume per role is the single highest-leverage action.
